The Art of Introspection

Imagine, how your life would be if you achieve inner peace and contentment inside yourself and find your true refuge regardless of whatever that is happening around you. For many of us, our lives are nowhere near peace and contentment. Instead, the duality of happiness and sadness, up and down, hope and disappointment is playing continuously in the background. Days and weeks are passing without knowing their true value. Imagine your life, when you open your eyes every morning and look at your day ahead as another opportunity to spread love and kindness. Imagine your life full of meaning that is rooted in a mission that you truly value by heart. All of these are possible through introspection and self reflection. These two are two great blessings and I am fascinated by how they light the path of my life journey.

Life is always asking us questions that lead us to find meaning in our journey and develop but we ignore them most of the time and prefer to continue our normal routine. Jennie Lee has a quote in her book, Spark Change: “Are you listening to the questions that life is asking you, right now?”. This has become my favorite question that I ask myself regularly.

How Questions and introspection can lead us forward?

I remember my professor in my research methodology course always emphasized that for a good research thesis, all you need is to ask the right research question and the rest of your research path will be clear. I believe the same is true in our life journey as it is supported by many spirituality and psychology experts. Asking the right question in life is critically important in directing us to the right path. It is only through introspection and self-reflection that we can clear our minds, overcome doubts and uncertainties, and step in our own bright path. In fact, introspection and artful questioning opens the door of wisdom and great awareness that all of us have as our biggest inner resource, but mostly forget about it. The key to access the inner wisdom is quieting the outer and inner noise and listening to your inner voice.

Where to start?

So, to begin, sit in a quiet place where there is no interruption and start with a short meditation practice to find peace and calmness. Then, ask yourself what is the most important thing that I have to know now  about my life? And then grab a pen and journal your inner calls. As you journal your answers, it is important to be honest and authentic. The right answer is not a superficial one, but the one that gives you a sense of inner peace.

If you are having difficult moments or struggling with difficult situations, ask yourself, what am I supposed to learn from this situation? By asking quality questions like this, you will be able to see the situation from a different lens and you will gain a deep insight into your life and the root of your struggle. At least by asking the quality questions, you will know where to look for the answer. Most of us try to look for the answer and root of our struggles in the outer world and blame outside factors for our problems, while the answer is inside us and the purpose of the struggle is to spark change in us.

To conclude

To conclude, remember that introspection is a missing essential component of our lives that we need very much today. It helps us to find meaning in our lives and give meaning to other people’s lives. To begin the process, you need to ask yourself the right question and answer them authentically. Don’t try to come up with answers right away as it takes time to hear the true deep answers.
