“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan”
-Jim Rohn
All of us know about goal setting and its crucial role in our success. However, when it comes to goals setting, we face a lot of confusion, procrastination, and dilemmas. In this post, I am going to show you a great simple way for goal setting that inspires you for success. So to begin, you can pick up a pen and paper, find a quiet place, and dedicate some time to yourself.
Goal setting process
To start the process, it is crucial to first dream your ideal life. It’s not easy, I know as we used to live our lives to conform to others’ expectations. Throughout our life we have developed mental constraints in mind about optimum life conditions, our abilities, and our potentials based on our environment and parenting styles. You didn’t choose your parents and conditions you were born in and whether you were born in wealth or poverty, but you can sketch your dream life now in a way you want. It is not too late to start and just imagine your dream life, whatever it is. What is one single most important thing you want to achieve in life that makes you happy and contempt? If it is difficult to do so, then you can imagine yourself on your deathbed thinking about your achievements and your regret. What are the important things you wanted to change about your life at this point?
What is next
When you write down different aspects of your dream life, then you need to take a close look at your current situation with a critical thinking lens. Where are you standing relative to your ideal self? What do you like about yourself now and what are things that you need to work on? By comparing yourself with your ideal self, you can then figure out what are your goals in life. I recommend putting some time in evaluating yourself in different aspects of physical health, mental and emotional wellbeing, overall happiness and wellness, spirituality and vision in life, relationships and family, and money and finance. You can then set up long term and short term goals for yourself to achieve your ideal self. Just keep in mind that you can literally live your life the way you want and limitations are often mental constructs. The ingredients you need are passion, trust, courage, grit, and consistency. One more point to remember is that authenticity is key and you need to be honest with yourself in sketching your dream life.
How to be authentic in goal-setting:
A quick check-in with your feelings about each goal can help you to be reassured with your goals or revise them until reaching satisfaction. In you check-ins, you can ask yourself why this goal is critically important to me? Answer the “Why” question honestly and non-judgmentally. I know the process is a bit time consuming, but you will be surprised with the result and how it can help you to clear your vision and move toward your wellness and happiness.
“Never give up on a dream because of the time it will take to accomplish. Time will pass anyway.”
